It would help if I knew what side of the fence you are on…are you a believer or no?

Anyhow, I have a couple of questions to ask, that could be asked of either side of the debate.

To the skeptic: If you are so assured that there is no such thing as paranormal activity, ghost or spirits why do you try to disprove them?

To the believer: Do you actively try to prove to non believers that these things do exist?

I was a skeptic for many years, then my parents passed from natural causes and the ‘visits’ started. I never saw them, it was always a distinct feeling of one or the others’ presence. Usually I would say out loud: “hi, dad, I can’t see nor hear you, but I can tell you’re near”, then fill them in on news, I’m okay, thanks for visiting, etc. After a few minutes, the ‘feeling’ would fade, but I would stay quiet in case there was some sort of message. Once a hardbound book slid off a high bookcase and landed in the middle of the floor about 5 feet from the case. The book had been given to me by my parents a couple of years before, and had their good wishes inscribed in it. It doesn’t take too much to make a believer after that!
The visits stopped after a year, but no worries–I’m happy that they are okay.

can someone direct me to a forum where i can ask SERIOUS paranormal questions?
i give up on YA, there are too many haters who mock every question and never ever give a decent answer. i’m tired of being mocked.

i read your other recent question. why don’t you buy a video camera that nobody in your house knows about, hide it somewhere and record something you suspect might “vanish”? im not mocking you but in all honesty i dont think your kids are playing jokes on you and i dont believe in paranormal activities. I honestly think its in your head.

Do you have to be a believer to answer paranormal questions?
If so why is this section under science and mathematics
So many great answers, it is hard to choose.

I don’t think that you have to be a believer to answer questions about the paranormal. You do however need to approach your answers with a critical mind and skeptics are really what make the paranormal so interesting.

I am a believer, I have seen enough, and conducted my own “investigations” and I know that there is something out there, something is happening… and maybe someday we’ll see what can be considered “proof”.

I think that this category is a little misplaced, many of the believers don’t really want it in the science category, and the skeptics/scientists are someone annoyed that its taking up space in here.

In any case, those who don’t believe are simply giving another perspective in a field that needs more and more every day.

Anyone know why paranormal questions are categorized under science?
Surely they should be under religion, pseudoscience or mental health.

Well, I don’t agree about being under mental health. I think the vast majority of paranormal experiences can be explained by our senses being tricked, or perhaps fear, anxiety, faith belief, poor investigative/analytical methods, or power of suggestion. These are all typical of the normal human condition. I think mental illness can practically explain only a very tiny part of it.

I personally think that it would be well placed under “Society & Culture”. I appreciate it when scientific explanations for paranormal or parapsychological phenomenon are sought, but that seems a rarity despite being in the Science category. But the reason why Yahoo placed it here is linked below.

paranormal phenomena is real. It has been observed, recorded, caught on Video take and experiences by millions of people. With the advent of technology, we are now capable of detecting more and more of the elusive energies than at any time in history.

I won’t ask you to accept that ‘paranormal’ activity has any specific religious or spiritual significance (that is up to the individual to decide to for themselves). But to deny that paranormal phenomena occurs is simply not consistent with the empirical evidence that is available.

It is the job of science to go into the unknown. You are free to believe that we are born, live and die – full stop. A lot of people don’t and there are significant measurements and evidence around that something is going on. The paranormal science go beyond what we can easily see, touch, taste, smell and hear to explore the questions of a deeper reality.

Well, there’s nothing “normal” about unexplained scratches appearing on one’s body…..but of course watching a show will increase your knowledge and make you think…..you learn what to look out for and what is a sign as opposed to a normal occurrence due to environmental factors…..If you find something on the floor that was on the edge of a shelf the night before you might check GOOGLE EARTH to see if a tremor hit in the middle of the night….or if you have cats that like to jump up and walk the counters and tables in the night, then they might be a factor to consider…..but usually if it’s paranormal it is or will be accompanied by other signs eventually…..so, kick back , enjoy and learn….keep an open mind, because nothing is set in stone except the stone itself…….

Why does Yahoo NEVER direct my questions on the paranormal to this category, they almost always get directed?
to the mythology and folklore section! Also it seems to me that the only way to have a question directed to this category is to put the actual word paranormal in it, hence all of the questions about the movie Paranormal Activity in this section.

I guess it directs to M&F because it is a higher traffic section. And yeah most of the questions are about that movie. I was going to see it, but i have seen too many spoilers by people who put it in the actual question, not even in the additional details.

I do know what you mean,being this is my favorite category I check back time to time to see if there are any new questions posted here and I have found that most of the time they are only directed here as you say,if you title it with paranormal or if it has anything to do with a ghost or haunting.I have however found questions in the mythology category too.You can try the word haunting in your posts and see if it gets you anywhere.I just always check both category’s on this subject.

Hi, I really got a surprise the other day. I have been going to Mythology and Folklore for all things Paranormal.

Then one day this came up by accident. The heading said Alternative. Under that I saw Paranormal, all by itself just like that.

Thought I’d go in to Alternative, but all that seems to come up under that is Alternative Medicine, and some other stuff I guess.

Tried Sociey and Culture. Tried something like Cultures and Groups. Didn’t find it.

Why do people bother to answer paranormal questions when they don’t believe in it?
Honestly, haven’t folks got better questions to answer or better things to do then jump in and insult people asking questions about paranormal phenomenon? If you don’t believe in paranormal occurrences, then just MOVE ON! Stop trying to bogart easy points by stopping by a question and offering nothing- just keep going, no one will miss you.
Might taking Paranormal Phenom out of Science and Mathematics be a good idea?
I believe that Paranormal Phenomena should be moved out of Science and Mathematics but Parapsychology left in the Sci/Math category, although as one commenter remarked, the pseudo-skeptics or cynical types would probably seek out posts and continue their onslaught no matter where it is. I enjoy a healthy dose of skepticism and I consider myself more of a skeptic than a believer most of the time, but I find it sad that there are people out there ‘stalking’ this category to ridicule others and add nothing of benefit other than personal attacks, and it occurs rather frequently.

I honestly don’t know. I just found out about this section, and have answered a bunch of questions, and I asked one, and all but 2 had answers saying that I was crazy for believing it, and should see a doctor, yada yada, one even just said ‘hi’ and I was like, if your only trying to get points by saying ‘hi’ then you should just stop it. your not helping anyone, so bugger off.

Because sometimes the best answer comes from someone who doesn’t buy into the hype. Sometimes (actually, all the time) the best answer is one which doesn’t interpret all things through magical thinking. And people who don’t buy into all the folklore may still hold a keen interest in the topic and why people believe the things they do, and may have an interest in helping others view things more concretely and scientifically.

And one key piece of information you missed is that this category (Paranormal) is inside the Science & Math category. Expect science types to be here. Mysticism at the exclusion of scientific reasoning is an intrusion on their turf, not the other way around. The best answer in this category is going to come from the scientific perspective, not from mysticism.

That being said, there’s no excuse to intentionally insult people. However, it seems to me that many believers interpret just the mere lack of support for their beliefs an “insult” while ridiculing skeptics at the same time. A bit hypocritical if you ask me. I call them “pseudo-believers”

Many questions I see it is evident the asker may need help, but the only ones who give them advise to seek help seem to be the skeptics. Why is this?

Yes, some people may need help with mental issues, but I don’t feel this is the place for it.

To start, most people here would be armchair psychologists at best and are not in any way qualified to make a diagnosis.

Further, a handful of questions or answers is not enough evidence to make a proper diagnosis even if the reader was in fact qualified.

I also think that dismissing a question as crap doesn’t help the person at all. What would be helpful would be to include substaniated sources that back up your opinion so that the person asking a question can then go forward and investigate.

While some people may be of the opinion that a questioner needs help – I have yet to see anyone include a link to a site with helpful info related to mental illness.

That someone may need help is ignored by many believers.In fact just the suggestion can lead to violations and insulting e-mails.I speak from experience.I’ve often seen people doing more harm then good.Especially with obviously troubled young folks.It’s very disturbing to me.

Skeptics answering paranormal questions?
Why are so many skeptics answering people’s paranormal questions? Why are they even browsing this category if they don’t believe in this stuff? As a 100% believer, it’s very frustrating to see so many people answering questions with “there’s no such thing as ghosts”. I have seen and experienced far too much that can’t be explained to actually think that there is no such thing as ghosts.

I think it’s a tad unrealistic to post questions/answers regarding ‘paranormal’ activity and not expect to receive a considerable amount of attention from ‘skeptics’.

The fact that you are unable to explain the things that you claim to have seen/experienced does not give your claims validity.

Some are obviously just here to troll you, or rile you up – others might be concerned about the alarming number of people who continue to believe in superstitious (paranormal or religious) nonsense.

I believe that you believe you have had supernatural/paranormal experiences, but barring any evidence or proof to back them up – they remain conjecture.

(edit: I don’t typically post here, but within a few minutes of reading questions – I’ve already found at least one person who was concerned about ‘paranormal’ feelings that I honestly think might be early signs of a seizure condition – not that all people who have paranormal beliefs have medical conditions, but in this case they were chasing down ghosts, when they might have a very real and possibly dangerous problem).

However, according to our beliefs human spirits do not linger on earth after death, but there are unseen creatures called jins or jinnies.Its mentioned in our holy book (Quran) that Jin ( ghosts in arabic language) do exist.
